It's hard to get your priorities straight these days. Too many things need my attention, that's why I think I'll have to turn down my role on The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
O.K., so I haven't officially been asked but why wouldn't I? I live just a few miles from where they film the show and I have a husband. Of course, my husband isn't a famous athlete, business mogul or hip hop star. And I'm not a rich, spoiled diva with nothing better to do then run people down and plan my next plastic surgery.
I am however a real Atlanta housewife. Unlike those on T.V. I actually work a job and take care of my own family and house. I even mow the yard upon occasion.
So why don't I get to be a T.V. star with an entourage? Probably because I mind my own business, keep my mouth shut and don't complain about things that are my own fault.
What an idiot I am!
My mom should have taught me to take offense easily, live beyond my means, and belittle my husband for not giving me everything I ask for! Geesh mom, what were you thinking by teaching me to work hard and have values? I am so out of touch!
I don't think it's too late for me though. If I keep watching all of these reality shows I'm sure I could learn to be a prima donna.
Rich though, that might take some doing. I shop for bargains, clip coupons and cut my own hair (and yeah, you can tell).
So maybe I'm not cut out to be a Real Housewife of Atlanta, I'll just have to settle for being a real housewife. I think Alvin will approve.

How we deal with getting older. Don't take it lying down, kick and scream in a most undignified way.

Jobs,we have jobs.
Jobs are funny things. Most of us have and need one but we'd rather be doing something else.
Alvin works in the printing industry in a highly technical job that takes a lot of skill but he'd rather be a professional fisherman, or a cowboy, or an astronaut.
Now me, I'm a cook and I love to cook. I'm really good with a knife (a fact which scares the bejesus out of Alvin because I also have a slight sadistic streak and he never knows when he'll wake up in the middle of the night to find me standing over him holding a buthcher knife) but I'd rather be a writer. I'm also trying to start a crafting business. You can find me at Etsy.com if you're interested.
Once you start getting older you begin to question what you're doing with your life and when it comes to jobs we're pretty much stuck with the choices we made when we were younger. Or are we?
Since the recession began we've all been re-thinking what we're doing with our lives.
Sometimes the only thing that prevents change is fear. Once you've lost your long-standing job you're not afraid anymore because the worst has already happened. Now is the time to make the change that you've always wanted.
Alvin and I have made big changes a couple of times in our lives.
When we were newly married with a small baby we lived in Florida near some members of Alvin's family. For different reasons they all moved back to Indiana where we all come from leaving us behind. We didn't care for being without family and things weren't going too well financially so we decided to pack up and head home. Mind you, we didn't have jobs or a place to live. The move itself was quite the adventure. Now when I say adventure I usually mean memorable but not necessarily good.
We moved from Florida to Indiana in January during the South's worst snow and ice storm in a decade. The day we packed up we had no one to help us load the U-haul. Alvin and I packed up the whole house by ourselves while the baby cried every time I left the room. Despite the stress all went well until we loaded the king-size mattress on top of the U-haul. I put the baby in the cab of the truck while I helped Alvin load and lash the mattress. Now it was time to hit the road and all we were missing was our 16 month old daughter. That's right, she was gone! The next few minutes were the worst of our lives until we found her on the neighbors front porch.
It took us 4 hours to go the first 100 miles because of the ice and having to re-tie the mattress. Long story short, we got to Indiana the next day, found a place to stay and two weeks later Alvin got a job.
Would we do that now? Not without a very compelling reason. I don't know what we were thinking.
We still lack a fear of the unknown. Maybe we're trusting, maybe we're stupid but I do know that every once in a while you have to shake things up to get rid of the dust. And sometimes the only way to make your dreams come true is to take a leap of faith.
This would all be so much easier if you knew what you wanted to do with your life when you were young enough to make easy changes. The great thing about growing older is that you finally know yourself well enough to make informed decisions. The bad thing about growing older is that you may feel that it's too late to change. Keep in mind that Grandma Moses didn't start painting until she was in her 70's.
Never let fear cripple you.
So if we ever lose our means of living here in Georgia we'll just hit the road and see what happens.
Next stop? Arizona looks nice.

Why I Blog
This is my first post so I thought I'd take a minute and tell you why I'm writing this blog.
I'm Terri and my husband of 27 years is Alvin. We have a daughter named Toni who is 26. We're not 50 just yet. I will be 50 in April of 2013 and Alvin will be 50 in June of 2013. That's right ladies, I got me a boy toy!
Now all this getting older is new to us so we thought that it might be helpful to write about it and share at the same time.
We plan on not growing old gracefully, to me that seems like giving up, we're going to grow old kicking and screaming in a most undignified way.
I don't mean that we're going to do anything unnatural like plastic surgery or liposuction but we'll do things the old fashioned natural way like exercise and good nutrition.
We figure we're in good company because nearly 11,000 people turn 50 every day in America, so maybe we can all get together and share some tips.
Getting older doesn't really bother us. You're only as old as you feel right? Well sometimes we feel 25 and sometimes we feel 105. I sure most people can relate.
I fully expected wrinkles and grey hair (which hasn't really happened yet) but what I find more disturbing is the sagging. Yep, everything is baggin,' saggin' and draggin'. Now I need to decide if I want it tucked, sucked or plucked.
When I was younger it was easy to start my day. Wash my face, a little moisturizer and I was ready to go. Now it's anti-wrinkle cream, firming serum, eye cream, lots of make-up. Yes, I've become high maintenance!
And what are these pains I've been getting? I'm too young for arthritis, right? O.K. let's just call it my achy, breaky hip. That sounds much better! Now it's a dance!
We don't let aches and pains slow us down. We take our achy feet, knees and hips for long walks to stay limber. Of course we do complain more but what's the point, nobody's listening anyway. They're just waiting for you to finish so they can tell you their horror story.
It's O.K. to get old but we believe that you don't have to get decrepit. How many times have you been out and you see that old man who's barely ambulatory. It scares us a lot to think that we may be looking at our future in that old man.
In the old days you could give up once you hit a certain age but not any more! You may have heard that 50 is the new 40 but I say that 50 is the new 35! Don't give up and keep moving forward. because if you don't you might as well dig a hole and lay in it.
By the time we turn 50 I expect we'll be among some of the best looking 50 year olds in the country. Then again I'll settle for not too bad looking for an old gal!
So come along while we share 50 years of adventures and wisdom on all kinds of things.
